Glass Spice Jars

Happy 2015 everyone! I can't believe I'm sitting here again making resolutions for the new year. As tradition, my husband and I watched one of my favorite new year's movies: New Year's Eve. It's one of those movies with a billion celebrities, and about 10 different story lines going on at once. If you haven't seen it, I think it's worth watching at least once.

My favorite quote in the movie is one I always reflect on this time of year:

"....it's suspended there to remind us before we pop the champagne and celebrate the new year, to stop, and reflect on the year that has gone by...Because that's what the new year's all about. Getting another chance. A chance to forgive, to do better, to do more, to give more, to love more, and to stop worrying about what if, and start embracing what will be. So when the ball drops at midnight...let's remember to be nice to each other, kind to each other, and not just tonight but all year long."

One of my resolutions this year is to cook more. I heard once that goals should be challenging, so instead of simply "cooking more," I want to make and perfect the following: potstickers, won tons, lasagne, pesto, gnocchi, risotto, etc.

I really want to get serious about this goal. 

First, I decided to look into a cooking class to learn how to make all these dishes, and signed up for this class.

Second, I decided that if I'm going to be spending all this time in my kitchen, I should really get it organized. Which leads me to our DIY for today:

I've always hated how my spice cabinet looks. I can never find the spice I'm looking for, and I don't like how spices come in different shapes and sizes depending on where you buy them.

When I visited my sister Robyn in Texas, I fell in love with her spice cabinet (I didn't even know that was possible!). It was beautiful, and I couldn't wait to make mine look the same.

You can use any glass jar with a secure lid, but these Crate and Barrel jars have been great. Be sure to wash and dry your jars thoroughly before filling.

I used Avery oval labels for my jars, but I'm sure any circular or rectangular labels you have on hand will work just fine. Go to the Avery website, design your labels the way you want, and print. It's that easy!

I am so happy with how they turned out. The jars look classy, and they make my kitchen feel so organized. I love opening up my cupboard and just looking at my spices. It has inspired me to organize my entire kitchen (well, maybe I'll tackle that resolution next year...).
