Homemade Oreos
Some of my favorite memories of growing up have to do with two things: playing dolls and making cooking shows..all with my sisters. We'd throw on our aprons, find our favorite recipes and switch off who was behind the camera. I remember practicing the classic "walk" from the oven back to the middle of the kitchen, while talking just like they do on the cooking shows. I also remember always making one of my favorite recipes: Homemade Oreos.Okay y'all. I think I like these cookies so much because they are super simple to make and are absolutely delicious. Whenever I give these to someone, they always ask for the recipe. This is a crowd favorite definitely fit to impress the in-laws or book group.
Let's get started:
Preheat your oven to 350°, and start getting 8oz. cream cheese and 1/2 cup butter softening to room temperature on the counter (that will be for your frosting).
Alright the dough contains 3 things. You know in other recipes how you have to wait and cream the butter and sugar together, and then slowly add the eggs? I'm never really patient enough for that kind of thing. But get this: you can add everything together for your oreos all at once:
2 Chocolate Devil Food cake mixes, 4 eggs, 1 cup butter
Mix it all up. Then make tiny balls to put on a cookie sheet, and bake for 9 minutes (maybe check the status at 8 min.)
Remove cookies immediately after taking out of the oven and let cool. Once all my cookies were cooled, and since it is practically impossible for me to make the same size cookies, match two cookies up (this will speed up the frosting part).
When I had about 2 more pans of cookies left to bake, I started making the frosting. Take your already set aside 8oz. of cream cheese and 1/2 cup butter and throw those into your mixer. Add a splash of milk (about Tablespoon) and just over 4 cups of powder sugar. Your choice, but then add about 3/4 tbsp of mint (or to taste) and your choice of food coloring (usually we'll do a shade of green but seeing as it's Fall, I did orange). Once your cookies are all the way cool, frost away!
As tempting as it is to grab a cookie right away, the oreos are better when they sit about a day, or overnight. This allows the cookie to set and avoids all the frosting from spilling out at first bite:)
This makes about 65 Oreos (of course depending on how big you decide to make them and well...how much dough you decide to taste:))
Enjoy!
Recipe:
2 Chocolate Devils Food Cake Mixes
4 eggs
1 cup butter
Mix until all ingredients are incorporated. Scoop on to cookie sheets and bake at 350° for 9 minutes. Let cookies cool and then match two together based on size.
Frosting:
1/2 cup butter
8 oz. cream cheese
2 tsp. milk
4 cups powder sugar (add more if desired)
3/4 tbsp. mint extract
Food Coloring of choice (we usually do green)
Cream together butter and cream cheese (previously softened). Add 1 tablespoon of milk and mix. Add one cup of powdered sugar, mix. Repeat with remaining 3 cups of powdered sugar. If you'd like the frosting thicker, add more powdered sugar. Lastly, add food coloring and flavoring extract. Frost cookies and enjoy!

Wow these look delicious!
ReplyDeleteLove this post G! My question is... why in the world is this recipe so huge in the first place?? I mean, 65 cookies? 2 cake mixes?? I've never really thought about that until now - but it's kinda crazy. As long as I can remember though, we NEVER even considered halving it... i guess that just goes to show how yummy they are. Even with 65 cookies I don't think they ever lasted more than a couple weeks.
