Road Trip Worthy: Audiobooks {Read by Author}

If you are traveling this summer by car as opposed to airplane, then you will need something to make those hours and hours of driving go by quickly.

Andrew, Penelope (12 months) and I drove to Arizona a couple weeks ago and it was a total success! 13 hours later I learned a thing or two that I would like to share with you.

This particular post will feature what we listened too during the drive.  Stay tuned for the activities and food we packed for Penelope in an upcoming post.

1. Dad is Fat by Jim Gaffigan

This is my new favorite book.  It is all about the hilarious life we call: parenthood.  There were so many times when he would be describing something and I would be all like "this is my life, this is my life!"  Andrew and I laughed out loud so.many.times! Major recommendation!

3. Is Everyone Hanging out without Me?  by Mindy Kaling

Okay, disclaimer.  I haven't actually finished this book yet. I wasn't able to get it in time for the road trip, but it would have been fantastic for the drive.  She is so funny!

***Edit:  I have finished this book and I have a mixed review.  I enjoyed hearing about how Mindy "came to be" and her experience as a writer on The Office.  I thought she was "just an actor," turns out she is a triple threat: writer, actor & producer, what?!  I found myself star struck at time as she would name drop... I had no idea she was friends with so many comedians (think Tina Faye, Amy Poehler...) I like to picture all of them in one room...

A lot of her book was very artsy.  Which is definitely not a bad thing, if your into picturing your life as if it is a sitcom.  I found out she has another book coming out this year and I will definitely read it.

I didn't love the few swear words that are in the book.  But that is just a personal preference.

I laughed out loud too many times to count and found myself listening to this book while I was cleaning out my garage, writing a blog post or driving in the car. So, it was a good "multitasking book."

3. I am Malala by Malala Yousafzai

I have been wanting to read this book for a long time.  The car ride was a perfect opportunity for this! There are a lot of hard-to-pronounce names and places so it was nice to not get caught up in the pronunciation (because Malala pronounces them for you) and you focus on the story. Very inspiring.
This book is about how Malala (as a teenager) stood up for Education and was shot by the Taliban.

4. Bossypants by Tina Fey

This book got the job done: fill the time as I drive and occasionally make me laugh. Warning, she does have a little bit of a mouth on her. Andrew and I really enjoyed the first 1/2 of the book, but then it just plateaued from there and never got any better.

She tells the story of "how she came to be."  I found it to be very interesting.  Fun Fact: Tina and Amy Poehler are legitimate friends, I thought it was only on TV when the host the Golden Globes...

I think the part I like the most about these books is that they are ready by the author.  Makes the book so much more engaging.

    1. It's so true. I'll be thinking about something she said quietly to myself and then burst out laughing.
